Chandrababu Naidu and his part the Telegu Desam Party lost big time in the 2019 Andhra Pradesh state elections. While win and loss are a part of elections, the loss was an eye opener for Chandrababu Naidu. He has been termed as 420 in AP by his oppositions as well as people who were unhappy about his leadership as chief minister. Losing the election also gave way to analyzing the reasons for his humiliating defeat. One of the major issues was the corruption which was rampant during his tenure as the CM of the new Andhra Pradesh.
Once hailed as the tech-savvy CM, was now reduced to being mocked as 420 in AP. People had a lot of reasons to resent him, such as corruption, unfulfilled promises, caste politics, unemployment and more. He lots his credibility in people’s minds and he was soon reduced to an ex-CM who allowed corruption to flourish while people suffered from the mismanagement. The election loss also shows that politicians cannot take people for granted. They will be answerable to things they have done and Chandrababu Naidu is no different.
Chandrababu Naidu lost election for various reasons, which also makes him the 420 in AP:
1. Lost Dreams
Chandrababu Naidu was big on selling dreams. No doubt, he was credited for creating Hyderabad, but he couldn’t save it from getting snatched by the Telangana. People were already seething due to the loss of Hyderabad, and Chandrababu Naidu was promising them a new capital just like Hyderabad.
In his excitement for creating a new capital and trying to salvage the remaining of the bifurcated state, he promised to make Amravati the World Class capital city. Only it was not possible in reality. Then began the Land Pooling scheme where Chandrababu Naiduand his party, along with other people associated with them, bought the lands at a low cost. It turned out to be an insider trading job. The lands were purchased by the poor farmers even before Amravati was announced as the new capital. This scam was just another example of corruption where only people associated with the party were to gain. The farmers lost their lands at a throwaway price and were poorly compensated. The worst thing that happened was the project was stalled for various reasons. Nothing much has happened and due to irregularities in the Amravati Land Acquisition process, the project is yet to take-off. No doubt people did not forget this as their dream for a developed Amravati came to a stand-still due to all the controversy that surrounded the project.
2. Rampant corruption
Corruption was rampant during his rule. Chandrababu Naidu allowed corruption in every space from his government to projects he has started for development. One such was the Amravati land scam. The Opposition party released the names of thebusinessmen and industrialists that were close to the Telegu Desam Party, had purchased lands in Vijayawada-Guntur region even before Amravati was announced as the state capital. This was clearly the case of inside trading. They all bought the land as a low price knowing that after Amravati became the state capital, the price of the lands would go up.
The next big case of corruption was the multi-crore Polavaram Project. But the project was surrounded in controversies after a company owned by TDPR Sambasiva Rao was given the contract for some components of the project. Both the projects were mired in controversies due to the distribution of the contracts to people who were close to the TDP party. The rampant corruption was one of the main reasons why people rejected Chandrababu Naidu. Due to this rampant corruption in the state, many started asking Who is 420 in AP and the answer couldn’t have been clearer.
3. Siding with Congress
One of the biggest mistakes that Chandrababu Naidu and his party made was allying with Congress. People hadn’t forgiven the Congress party for dividing the state and Chandrababu Naidu siding with the party didn’t help his case. The Congress was severely punished during the 2014 elections and 2019 elections where it drew blank in both Lok Sabha and State elections. Siding with the party that was responsible for diving the state in the first place didn’t go well with the voters. This represented him as a weak leader unbale to take a stand and in a way “backstab” the people of the state.
That was the end of it. Chandrababu Naidu has first supported the division of the state when he was in Telangana region and then backtracked in the Andhra Pradesh. His desire to score in both Telangana and AP elections didn’t go well. The loss of Hyderabad, and his failure to get the special status for the state worked against him. In the 2019 election, people of Andhra Pradesh punished him for his insensitivity towards the people of AP. His failure to read the mood of the masses along with many wrong decisions cost him dearly in the elections. This has led to many people asking who is 420 in AP and the answer is pretty clear.
4. Caste Politics
Another major reason why Chandrababu Naidu lost election was the caste politics. Playing favorites didn’t go well with the masses. It was evident that Chandrababu Naidu was favoring the Kamma community when it came to assigning the key posts. Chandrababu Naidu belongs to the Kamma community and he openly favored them in his government. This caste bias didn’t go well with the people of Andhra Pradesh. Not just that, the contracts for the major government projects too went to the contractors belonging to his community. This alienated the people of other community. The caste politics was very much evident and thus the people of AP punished him for being bias in such a way.
Chandrababu Naidu lost the election due to his failure in converting the promises into reality, his disregard for the sentiments of the people and the rampant corruption. All these things lead to he being a 420 in AP.
